Christoph Schreiber
04.11. - 30.12.2006
Opening
Saturday, November 4, 7 - 9 pm
Gallery Antje Wachs is pleased to present photographies and a video by Swiss artist Christoph Schreiber for the first time in Berlin. The exhibition will be on view from 04.
November until 30. December.
We are looking at a ruinous tower in front of a condensed, green forest of leaves, above
arises a dramatically lighted sky. A buslike wagon, that looks ahead and from behind the
same, is parked in front of bulging concrete building that reminds one of a bridge.
A huge waterfall abyss, which opens itself in the middle of the picture to absorb masses
of water, covered with fog that is directly enmeshed in the sky.
Because of the in all pictures really obvious absence of individuals and the retentive palette
of colours the viewer is reminded of documentary- or classical landscape photography.
By looking closer at the scene and because of a feeling of irritation that appears now,
one can recognize constructed and in the shown way not possible natural phenomenons.
Christoph Schreiber is not interested in a realistic rendering of our environment, but rather
in the invention, combinatorics and free arrangement of the located motives.
Schreibers’ pictures result from working in the studio at his computer while using digital
manipulation. Because of this, the artist sees himself close to the tradition of painting:
the landscape paintings of romanticism also often emerged in the studio on the base of
sketches that were done outside before, so that most of the times it was hard to identify
the finished painted andscape in real nature.
The constructed picture worlds of Schreiber pretend to be reality, but animate for further
reflection because of their scurrility and peculiarity. At the same time the viewer may sense
a feeling of irritation or even threat.
In the video work shown in the project room the artist uses the same way of newly-
and differently assambly of picture fragments and sequences as in his photography.
A vehicle equipped with all kinds of diverse flash lights and warning hooters is caught
in a neverending circular flow. This could be seen as an indicator for the permanent
alert in which the US politics has gotten entangled since 9/11.
There has been published an accompanying catalogue.
